Despite out-hitting Essendon, 9-8 and being errorless in the field the firsts lost 6-4 last night.
The start was delayed while the (predominantly Waverley) ground crew repaired the cutouts around the bases to make the surface playable and safe, with play commencing at 7:15.
We gave up 2, 1 and 3 runs in the first three innings respectively and were playing catch-up from then on.
Cody Caulfield threw a strong 4.2 innings after coming in to relieve at the start of the 4th inning. He kept Essendon scoreless, as did Kynan Jones who relieved Cody with 2 out in the top of the 8th.
Jordy, Damon and Ben picked up 2 hits each, with Reece, Rusty and Oscar also getting hits.
We had opportunities to score more runs, but were unable to produce the hits at the right time with runners in scoring position.
Our defence was very strong, with Jordy making several great plays from third base. Mitch H and Ben also made some clutch plays.
So now we have to do it the hard way, winning the next two games.
Our next game is at Melbourne Ballpark, Alrona this Saturday starting at 4:30.
Then we play them again on Sunday either at 2:00 or 4:30 depending on the Division 2 results.
Our supporters significantly outnumbered Essendon’s last night. I hope as many as possible of you will be able to make the journey out to Altona on Saturday AND Sunday to support the boys and show that Waverley is still the strongest club in Victoria.
